Back to School Spins and Free Backpacks

Long Beach, California’s 7th Annual “Back to School Summer Blast” provided children with free backpacks. Free food, face painting, music, and spins on the Prize Wheel helped make the event a success.

The event took place on August 25, 2018, at Scherer Park. Through a partnership with community organizations including the Port of Long Beach and the Long Beach Police Officers’ Association, the event provided over 1,000 children in attendance with backpacks filled with school supplies.

Along with the fun activities, attendees also had the chance to receive free health, height, weight, and BMI screening from medical stations set up by Kaiser Permanente and Benevolence Health Centers.

“For seven years we have hosted this crucial event in the community that many families look forward to and rely upon, and it is always one of the highlights of the year for me,” Councilman Austin said in a press release. “It is important that our kids are healthy and return to school. The lack of school supplies should not be a barrier to success and I am doing what I can to make sure every student has the tools they need to thrive.”
